Freezeout Lake

Freezeout Lake stands as Montana's primary staging area for snow geese, hosting gatherings of up to 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans before their onward flights. During spring, the snow geese embark on a journey to Alberta and central Saskatchewan in Canada, where they join forces with hundreds of thousands of other snow geese from Texas and the Gulf Coast states. From there, in a series of shorter flights, they continue to their nesting grounds along the wind-swept, extreme northwest Arctic coast of Canada.

The snow geese typically arrive at Freezeout Lake in early March, seeking respite after a nearly 1,000-mile flight from California. The optimal viewing times for observing these birds are from sunrise to 10:00 am and from 4:30 pm until sunset. Visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars, telescopes, a light lunch, and warm clothing for a more enjoyable viewing experience.

Managed by the Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area (note the spelling without an "e"), the area's primary goal is to provide habitat for waterfowl and upland game bird production, as well as public hunting and viewing opportunities.

Hunting opportunities at Freezeout Lake include general public hunting for waterfowl and upland game birds, with tundra swan hunting available by permit only. Additionally, successful applicants can participate in muskrat trapping.

Wildlife viewing at Freezeout Lake is a year-round activity, offering opportunities to observe upland game birds and raptors during winter, waterfowl migrations in spring and fall, and waterfowl and shorebirds during summer. Visitors can call 406-467-2646 for an automated waterfowl update.
